Working for a Radio Station

Posted By Juicy-Lie on April 16, 2008 @ 2:38 am

A couple of summers ago, I had the dream job of working for a radio station.  Sure, I wasn’t on air per se, but it was a great time to merge the two passions of my life: music and money.

I started out as a go to boy at the bottom of the corporate totem pole.  Some of the early tasks that I did was go buy event tickets, and drive around the SUB for the radio station.  Sure, it wasn’t very glamorous, but it was a start, right?

I was able to slowly move up the corporate ladder and towards the end of the summer I was helping out with the creation of advertisements for radio listeners.  It was a chance for me to practice what I had learned in college and was a great learning experience.

But, like all summer jobs, they come to an end.  I will always remember my role as part of the radio station that everyone in town loves.

Deciding How to Spend my Money

Posted By Twyla on April 15, 2008 @ 7:24 pm

When I decided that I was going to buy my very first paintball gun, I did not realize that it would be so hard to decide which one to get. As I was only fourteen, I worked very hard, cleaning yards and shoveling snow, so this is a lot of money to me and I always make my decisions very carefully.

I really liked the Tippmann brand of paintball guns and accessories, but I was not sure that it was what I really wanted. They were very expensive, but they would probably be better quality and last longer than some of the cheaper ones. I didn’t want to spend my money on something that was going to break or fall apart.

I also really liked the Spyder paintball guns. It was a really good name in sports equipment and they had a really good warranty on their products. It took me awhile to figure out which one to go with, but eventually, I purchased a Spyder.  Let me just say, it was worth every penny.

Then and Now

It has been a very long time since I have had to write an essay.  The other day my young granddaughter asked me for help with hers and I did my very best to remember the proper composition for one.  Working on it together brought back many memories and I had a good time reminiscing with her.

We talked about when I was in college and working on my dissertation.  She was fascinated that they even had colleges back then, as she thought that all old ladies used to be schoolteachers and we didn’t have to go to school to become one.

Amidst our discussions about my thesis and her essay, she realized that school is not really that much different now as it was when I was in school.  I may have attended an old one-room schoolhouse, but I had to learn the same things that she is learning today.

Searching for a Web Designer

Posted By Juicy-Lie on April 14, 2008 @ 3:35 pm

My site has been in need of a new look for way too long and it is time that I do something about it.  I know that my web design skills are not at a level that I would need to make the site the way I would like it to be so I will have to hire a web design firm to do it for me.

Since I am currently living in New York and I decided that it would be best if I found a firm in the same city that I was living.  I went online and did a search for "web design New York", and came up with some candidates for companies that may be able to help me out.

Now what I am doing, is looking through their portfolios to see the quality of their design is while as if they of design sites that are related to my industry.  From what I see, some of the design firms do very good work while others of them do substandard designs.

I’m going to make a short list of companies that I would consider doing business with and get in contact with them to see if they would be interested in doing a site design for me.  From there, I will have to choose a company of those who respond and get the work underway.

A Waste of Time

The one thing that I have always hated the most about going to school was the essay writing. It is so time consuming and I don’t see what we learn from doing it. I learn a whole lot more when I study for an exam than I do when I write an essay.

I asked my English teacher about it one day and she suggested that we would remember more of our coursework if we wrote essays about it. I had my doubts, but I figured she would know what she was talking about. I decided that I would wait for my final and find out where I had gained the most knowledge.

Amazingly enough, I did much better on the sections of the exam in which I had studied for previous exams than I did on the parts of the exam for which I wrote essays. This just went on to prove my point that essay writing is a waste of time.

Tried Something New

When I became a professor for the first time I decided to do things a little bit different than most college students were used to.  I decided to give the students a big assignment for the majority of their grades rather than a whole bunch of tests and exams.

I decided that if they wrote me a very researched and descriptive philosophy essay that I would cut out over half of the tests and exams that they would normally have to write.  I ran this idea past the students and asked their opinion on it, making sure that they knew that they would have a lot of time to work on it.

They loved the idea, provided that I gave them a list of essay topics and they could choose which topic they wanted to write on.  The students did such a good job and I was very proud of my first class as a first-time professor.  Over the years, I have continued this practice and I know that many students want to be in my class.

Many Types of Essays This Term

Posted By Juicy-Lie on April 12, 2008 @ 9:32 pm

Over last term, I’ve written many different essays from many different classes.  While some of these have been fun to do, the rest of them have been pretty much a nightmare.

The two easy essays for me were my arts essay and sociology essay.  They would be two of my favorite subjects which made the classes and assignments that much easier to do.  In fact, I would almost say that I actually had fun writing essays but that might be a little bit of a stretch.

The one essay that I hated writing was the management essay for my business management class.  Instead of requiring us write one short essay, we had to write one twenty page essay for the course, which is one of the largest essays I’ve ever written.

Needless to say, the school term is coming to an end and we won’t have to write essays for the next few months – thank goodness!

Buying Out Home Depot

As we live in a very small town, a long distance from any major city, I used to get so excited when my husband and I would take a trip to the city.  In a very short manner, I soon discovered, that most of our trips to the city would entail spending hours upon hours in various hardware and home improvement stores.

As a newlywed, this really irked me that it was not my idea of a fun time.  My husband, however, decided that was this is the best way to spend our time, as he could write off the trip as an expense for his construction company.  I decided that I would try to make the best of a situation that was not ideal for me.

I soon learned that I could spend hours upon hours looking at the garden equipment available for purchase in the stores.  In the end it probably ended up costing my husband a lot more for taking me to his hardware stores then it would be if he had just left me at home.

Back Where My Heart Belongs

A long time ago when I was a very young child, my family owned a large sheep farm in the north.  I have many fond memories of this time including the times we would spend camping in the pastures. My older sister and I would run around in the fields day after day and never get tired of it.

We spent a cold nights sleeping in canvas wall tents which kept us very warm and cozy.  In rare instances we would have to bring a baby lamb into the tent to warm him up.  My sister and I loved it when this happened and we soon adopted the baby lamb as our new pet.

I have long since grown up and moved to the city, where I spent many years in college getting my masters degree.  I have achieved everything that I always said I would and this has made me realize that my heart will always belong in a field far away, up north.

Missing out on Youth

Posted By Juicy-Lie on @ 6:58 am

A long time ago when I was working on my PhD dissertation I was but a very poor college student.  I live very meagerly and basically put all of my money towards my education, knowing that it would all pay off in the end.

Was this the right choice?  I am still not sure.  Though I do have everything I can imagine I would ever want now, there are things that I feel I may have missed out on when I was young enough to enjoy them.  I guess, what I don’t know won’t hurt me.  Just like, when I have a student who likes to buy essay papers, if I don’t know it certainly doesn’t hurt him.

Sometimes I think that I hadn’t spent so much time working on my essay and spent a little more time being the young adults that everybody was meant to be that I be happier today.  I am not saying that I am not happy, I have a beautiful wife and two great kids, but I never did get to be young and I think I missed out.
