Incorporating the Internet into a Kindergarten Curriculum

Posted By Juicy-Lie on June 30, 2007 @ 7:38 pm

This year, for the first time ever, I was told that I had to incorporate computer and internet education into the curriculum of my kindergarten class.  Not being a technological person myself, this scared me half to death.  In the weeks before school began for the year, I decided I had better hop on the information super highway and decide what it was that I was going to teach these fresh minds about - a topic I knew very little about.

I came across a site called thedollspalace.com.

As I played with the cartoon dolls, made characters using the dress up games, and colored pictures online, I knew this was definitely something these kids could get into.

During the first weeks of school, I was overjoyed to see their creative little minds design dolls, which surprisingly resembled themselves.

The coloring pages were also a huge hit with them.  It is so much fun for them to know that they can see what Piglet would look like if he was green, knowing if they didn’t like it, they could change him with the click of the mouse.

Although I have much to learn and to teach these children about the internet and its’ many uses, I know thedollspalace.com has become a permanent fixture in our classroom.

Things to do in the Cayman Islands

Posted By Juicy-Lie on June 29, 2007 @ 1:37 am

There are many heritage attractions and museums on the Grand Cayman Islands. You will find many things to do during the day, from visiting a turtle farm to taking in a gallery or craft market. Hiking and diving are wonders and there are many options to choose from, even as a beginner. There is never an end of things for children to experience and if you want some romantic time alone, there are some excellent childcare providers available to you. When the sun goes down in the Cayman Islands, the nightlife will begin. There are so many nightlife activities to take in, including dancing under the stars, enjoying drinks at a local martini bar, or taking in a play or concert. Families can enjoy an open-air dining experience at the many Cayman Island restaurants where children are encouraged to dance the night away. Watching the children dance will make you remember the excitement of being young again, and when you get up to join the children, you will be young again.

A Site Can Appeal to Your Sense of Humor

Posted By Juicy-Lie on @ 2:29 am

On the internet today, there are so many serious websites.  Such sites deal with cold hard facts, the sale of items, or even something as simple as email.  I’ll let the secret out: Not all sites need to be boring.

In fact, sometimes you just need a little dose of funny with your website.  Sites that offer funny videos are a good example: they are not so much there to sell you something, rather they are there to entertain you.  Come on, everyone needs to laugh a little bit each day.

Even those comics that you read in your paper each day can be found online.  Funny comics can also be very applicable to your everyday life - a good example is the workplace politics presented in Dilbert comics.  Being an engineering student, and Dilbert being a comic written by engineers, I definitely get the humor.

Lets also not forget blonde jokes.  This is of personal interest to me as I am a blonde (when my head isn’t shaved).  Even though these jokes just don’t describe me, I have had a few dumb blonde friends in my life.

In conclusion: don’t forget that websites do not have to be boring all the time.  Fun and humorous sites have a place on the internet.  In fact, you will get more visitors to your website if you entertain them - who wants to look at facts and numbers seven days a week anyways…

Improving Your Brain Health

Posted By Juicy-Lie on June 27, 2007 @ 2:31 am

When you are young, you brain is constantly challenged.  Your first step, your first word, school, and work all helps our brain to develop.  As we get older though, we encounter less of these challenges and can lose some of our cognitive abilitiles.  There are five key areas you need to focus on: healthy eating, exercise, stimulate your brain, and reduce stress.  Lets look at these in detail.

Healthy eating can help out your brain in many ways.  Getting the right nutrients helps your brain to work better.  Eating properly also helps give the brain the energy to function properly.  Studies have also shown that poor nutrition can impair memory and cognitive abilities.

Exercise specifically regular exercise can help your cognitive abilities.  Consistently working out helps increase blood flow and oxygen to the brain.  It also helps you to focus on goals and targets which also will help you with your other daily challenges.  Little or no exercise also causes the brain to become sluggish.

Stimulating your brain is a good way to help it grow.  The brain flourishes when presented with new challenges and creates new neural pathways to store these new skills.  Try doing something as simple as crossword puzzles each and every day.  They are free if you use printable crossword puzzles that you can find online.  If you want an even greater challenge try using a free online crossword maker to make puzzles of your own.  Use the puzzles that you create to challenge your friends as well.

Reducing stress is also a key to improving your brain health.  Taking a walk, getting a dog, or going on a vacation are simple ways to reduce the stress in your life.  For those of you that think a little stress is good, just remember that too much stress can be toxic - be sure to take some time for yourself.

If you focus on the four above topics, you will have a strong and healthy brain.  Neglecting even one of them can have serious consequences - make an attempt to take care of your brain each day.

Tips on Three Popular Insurance Offerings

Posted By Juicy-Lie on June 25, 2007 @ 2:25 am

Mortgage Insurance

Mortgage insurance is insurance for the lender and is sometimes required by lenders on lower down payment loans. It’s insurance that protects the lender in case you’re unable to pay. Borrowers are able to purchase homes that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford, due to high 20 percent down payment requirements.

Private Mortgage Insurance (PMI) is insurance on your mortgage designed to protect your mortgage company against non-payment should you not make your loan payments. Keep in mind that the goal of this insurance is to protect the lender, not you. Private mortgage insurance is frequently called for by mortgage companies because of the larger number of defaults that are a result of minimal down payment mortgages. The good thing about private mortgage insurance is that it allows borrowers to get into properties that they might not otherwise be able to purchase because of large down payment requirements.

ROP Term Life Insurance

When purchasing term life insurance, many buyers feel that their premiums are wasted should they outlive the term of their insurance policy.  Would you like Term Life Insurance that refunds your money if you don’t die? Well now you can, it’s called Return of Premium Life Insurance. ROP came about because many people outlived their term policies and had nothing to show for it.   What makes ROP different?

Return of Premium or ROP combines the benefits of traditional term life insurance with a return of premium feature. Simply put your family receives a lump sum death benefit if you die, otherwise if you win your bet with the insurance company and you live the insurer returns all your premiums. This money-back guarantee can be particularly comforting for those that believe death will not occur during the term of coverage.

Car Insurance

What value will your insurance company place on your vehicle after an accident?   If you get in an accident and “total” your car, it’s your insurance company’s responsibility to provide you with an amount of money that would purchase an equivalent car. Sometimes they don’t. They have their own formulas and will often consider quotes from various dealers that aren’t always fair, and this isn’t always a good indication of your specific vehicle’s true worth. The vehicle’s condition, mileage, and repairs tell the true story of the unique value of your car. If the value quoted to you doesn’t meet your expectations, you may want to present them with some local quotes of your own. It’s recommended that you keep a documented vehicle history as well, so you can present repair and maintenance receipts if there’s a dispute. Make sure the amount you and your insurer settle on includes sales tax for the purchase of your replacement automobile.

Mitefind - A look at a paid web directory

Posted By Juicy-Lie on June 21, 2007 @ 11:42 pm

If you ever search for anything online, you may be familiar with search engines.  In fact, you should be.  To be honest, how else would you be able to find anything?

Try a web directory.  Web directories work very much like a search engine, but instead of being a list of sites that have been scooped up while travelling the internet, a directory is a collection of sites, edited by a human being, that have been submitted by webmasters to promote their sites.  The advantage of a web directory is that the human editors filter out a lot of poor and spammy sites.  So, in theory, you should be looking at the best of the best.

Today I came across a web directory that I thought I should mention: Mitefind .  What sets this site out from the competition is that it is an old search engine that turned into a directory.  Why?  Well, talking to the owner, he pointed out that most third party search engines just show search results from other search engines such as Google, Yahoo, etc.  By changing into a directory, he could show custom results without depending on the big boys.  The result:  a paid link directory .

Again, I had to ask, why make the site a paid directory?  Again, the answer related to content and time:  With so many free directories, the owners get backlogged with the number of free submissions that they have to approve.  In fact, I have another free directory that gets between 100 and 200 submissions per day.  I honestly do not have the time to keep up while approving sites for nothing.  This way, when someone submits their site and they pay for it, I know that they are serious - and I get their site approved right away.

Is it worth it?  You bet.  I have promoted some sites on free directories that have taken up to a year to be approved - that really does not help me when I need traffic now.  So, check it out, pay for a link and I promise you will have no regrets.  My site was listed quick and even now, my search engine ranking has improved because of it.

Canadian Business Blog

Posted By Juicy-Lie on @ 11:26 pm

There are so many blogs and sites out there relating to business or business opportunities in the United States.  Being from Canada, I was looking for a site that offered something specifically to me and my country.  After a little searching (got to love those search engines) I did come across a business opportunities blog .

My first impression was of a well laid out website.  Navigation was easy and I did notice the headlines on the site easily.  Some examples of the headlines on the site were:

Listen to your gut - Picking a Realtor

Saskatoon has strongest housing resale market in Canada

Websites offer high ROI, low risk

Provide a daycare service for your patrons to increase your profits

The topics covered on the site are geared towards business opportunities, online opportunities, and real estate investing.  I found the articles to be unique and geared towards a Canadian audience (though international readers can learn as well).  I would have to say that I am most impressed with the site and would suggest to anyone interested in business to check it out.  I think you should check it out too.
